Istanbul Airport Atatürk was opened 24 km from the Istanbul city centre, Turkey in 1924 as Yesilkoy International Airport. Yesilkoy is a neighbourhood of the municipality of Istanbul. In 1980, the airport was named after the founder and the first president of the modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Today, it serves as the main international airport for Istanbul; followed by Sabiha Gökcen International Airport.
It is considered the 30th busiest airport in the world carrying over 37 millions passengers each year. For the traffic of international passengers, Istanbul airport is placed as the 17th world busiest airport.
Atatürk airport has got four terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) for domestic flights, Terminal 2 (T2) for international flights, Terminal 3 (T3) for cargo flights and General Aviation Terminal.
Tepe-Akfen-Ventures (TAV) has been operating the airport terminals since 2000. In 2005, with the amount of $4 billion, TAV won the concession to operate Istanbul airport for the next 15 years which is the highest privatization project offer in Turkey and the entire Middle East. TAV’s project includes the building of new boarding bridges and gates, a new traffic control tower and the expansion of the international terminal (T2).
